Kitsch or Art? Guessing Game

A series of questions designed to gauge your aesthetic sensibility. Structure is dualistic\either/or, usually.

>>>> question one

Which magazine would you prefer to read/look at with interest?

The New Yorker

>>>>>question two

Which mode of highly-organized Western music appeals to you?

Mozart, symphony no. 40 in g minor, 1st movement

Tchaikovsky, Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48

>>>>>question three

What film is more enjoyable?

The Royal Tenenbaums

Rear Window

>>>>>question four

do you wear thick-framed glasses because your eyesight is so very poor it necessitates a heavy frame to support the weight of your lenses, or do you wear them because it is fashionable?

>>>>>question five

Which graph makes more sense?

>>>>>question six

Which painting seems "familiar?"

American Gothic / Grant Wood

Angelus Novus / Paul Klee

1. The New Yorker is perhaps the most kitschy, vile publication that exists. Anyone that claims they enjoy it is either lying, boring, or joking.

2. Tchaikovsky, the genius of kitsch. Natalie Portman, his genius kitschy actress-slave, in both V for Vendetta and Black Swan.

3. The films of Wes Andersen typically rely on a bright and unrealistic color scheme to make them appealing. Hitchcock, on the other hand, relies on the form of the camera, the idea of the camera. In other words: preoccupation with surface vs. sensitivity to mechanism.

4. Your answer means nothing. You need to see don't you.

5. Hegel graph (vs.) Kuhn/Derrida graph. Lacking a reference point? Think about real progress verses the illusion of progress. Now think about that in relation to the art you like.

6. The answer should be obvious.
